SWIFT Messaging Overview

Explore SWIFT message types used in international banking. Each serves a different communication purpose. Any SQR400 demonstrations use simulated data and do not transfer funds or change real bank balances.

A reference to MT message families, including legacy payment formats. Cross-border payment instructions moved to ISO 20022 after coexistence ended in November 2025; message availability depends on the service and standards release. Read our ISO 20022 guide →

Customer & Bank Transfers

MT103 — Single Customer Credit Transfer

A customer payment instruction carrying payer, beneficiary, amount, currency, and routing information in a structured message.

MT103 / MT202 COV — Cover Payment

Separates the customer payment instruction from the bank-to-bank cover instruction used through the correspondent chain. MT202 COV carries underlying customer details for the cover leg.

MT103 GPI / SWIFT gpi

Payment tracking uses a Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference (UETR). Swift gpi adds visibility into payment status, routing, and charges; it is a service rather than a separate MT message type.

MT103 via IPIP / IPID

IPIP and IPID are not standard MT103 message variants in the referenced catalogues. A routing label alone does not establish a supported payment method or settlement capability.

MT103 REMIT / MT103 STP

REMIT supports extended remittance information. STP applies stricter formatting rules to support straight-through processing. Availability depends on the applicable standards release and service.

MT101 — Request for Transfer

A request to execute one or more customer transfers, used in corporate payment initiation such as payroll and supplier payments.

MT102 / MT102 STP — Multiple Customer Credit Transfer

Groups multiple customer credit transfers into a single message. The STP variant uses a restricted format intended for automated processing.

MT110 / MT111 / MT112 — Cheques

MT110 advises cheque details, MT111 requests a stop payment, and MT112 reports the status of a stop-payment request.

MT200 / MT201 / MT202 — Institution Transfers

MT200 concerns an institution moving funds for its own account; MT201 groups such transfers. MT202 is a general financial institution transfer.

MT203 / MT204 / MT205 — Interbank Instructions

MT203 groups general institution transfers, MT204 is a financial markets direct-debit message, and MT205 is an institution transfer execution message.

MT210 — Notice to Receive

Advises an account-servicing institution of expected incoming funds so it can prepare to identify the credit.
